Chicken Water Calculator
Enter your flock size and the weather to estimate how much water your chickens need each day.
Water per day0.79 gal
How we calculate it
Water per day = birds Γ 0.5 L, doubled to about 1 L per bird in hot weather.
Based on:
- Provide constant clean water; intake rises in heat (Poultry Extension)
- Water and daily care for a laying flock (University of Minnesota Extension)
Figures are typical guidelines for planning. Your birds, breed, climate, and feed will vary.
Frequently asked questions
How much water does a chicken drink per day?
A hen drinks about half a litre (roughly one pint) of water per day in mild weather, and can drink close to double that in heat.
Do chickens need more water in summer?
Yes. Water intake rises sharply in hot weather because chickens cool themselves by panting. Always provide extra, shaded, cool water in summer.
How big a waterer do I need?
Size the waterer so you refill at most once a day. For 6 hens, plan for about 3 litres a day in mild weather and up to 6 litres in heat.
